WiFi Explorer is a wireless network scanner that allows you to view the parameters of your WiFi network and the networks of your neighbors. The collected information will help you correctly position and configure the access point so that the connection is stable and fast.
I recently bought a new Xiaomi MI 4 router and thanks to WiFi Explorer I was able to achieve better internet speed throughout the apartment. The utility helped to identify a problem with the communication channel, which I did not even know about.
As soon as I changed the communication channel, the internet speed doubled.
What network parameters you need to pay attention to
You can determine and track the quality of WiFi by three parameters:

Shows the signal strength between the computer and the access point. Anything greater than 80% or -50 dBm is good.
WiFi Explorer shows signal and noise levels as a percentage. But more often these values are shown in dBm (decibel per milliwatt) with a minus sign. You can switch between percent and dBm in the program settings.
Problems with a weak signal are solved head-on: move the access point to another place; move the computer; buy an access point with a more powerful transmitter.
Locate the access point where the signal strength is maximized. Xiaomi has a strong transmitter, so I had no problems with the signal level.
Noise – All unwanted signals on the communication path between the computer and the access point. This is mainly interference with the points of neighbors, and only then interference from microwave ovens and other equipment.
In most cases, noise can be reduced by choosing the correct channel in the access point settings.
After the first launch, my point automatically set the 149th channel. At the same time, the noise jumped in the range of 10-22%, and the signal level remained at 80-85%. By changing the channel to 44, I reduced the noise to 1%, and increased the signal to 90%.
By simply changing the channel, I doubled the Internet speed.
SNR (Signal to Noise Ration)
SNR is the signal-to-noise ratio. In WiFi Explorer, this value is displayed not as a percentage, but in dB. The higher the value, the cleaner the connection, with less noise. I have a signal of 90% and a noise of 1% SNR is 57 db.
How to choose a WiFi channel
The channel indicates the exact frequency that WiFi will operate on. For an access point operating at 2.4 GHz, the real frequency of the 6th channel is 2437 MHz, the 7th channel is 2442 MHz, etc.

For good speed and stable connection, you need to choose the least loaded frequency channel, on which there are few or no neighboring access points. You can see the channels of the points of neighbors in the tab Spectrum…
There are very few channels at 2.4 GHz and they are often congested with neighbors. If you are still at 2.4 GHz and the noise level is high, try looping through all the available channels and monitor the Signal and Noise readings in WiFi Explorer.
For most client devices, the transmitter power is reduced on the outer channels, therefore, for 2.4 GHz, the successful channel should be somewhere in the middle (six).
If there are too many access points around, the noise level may not be reduced. Then think about a new point and the transition to 5 GHz, where there are more channels. Oddly enough, people still have very few points at 5 GHz.
