How to choose the “default” application depending on the file type

Suppose you have several video players installed on your system, but you want the videos to always open in the conditional Elmedia Player, and not the standard QuickTime. This is very easy to do.

  1. Right-click on the file you want to open and hover over the item Open in program;
  2. Now press and hold the key Option… Paragraph Open in program will change to Always open in the program …;
  3. Select an application from the list with which you want to always open this file.

I choose Elmedia Player as the default player for .mp4 files

Now all videos in .mp4 format will open in Elmedia Player and all other videos in QuickTime.

The exact same trick can be done with absolutely any files and formats: documents, images, etc.
