Technology eSIM debuted on iOS smartphones with the release of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. In 2019, it appeared in Russia, now eSIM can be issued with several mobile operators. However, many find it difficult to set up two SIM cards on an iPhone (one of which is an eSIM), while others find it too difficult. In fact, it takes a few minutes to set up an eSIM, and then you can activate your carrier’s cellular data plan without having to use a physical nano-SIM card.
What is eSIM
Basically, eSIM is used to allocate one number for work needs, and another for personal. In addition, it is very convenient to set up an electronic SIM card before you go abroad to use a local SIM card with inexpensive cellular communication and the Internet. In this case, one tariff plan is used for voice communication (you remain with your number and they can call you), and the other is used for data transmission (Internet without roaming).
Which iPhones support eSIM
At the moment, the technology is supported in the following Apple smartphones:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE 2
How to set up eSIM on iPhone
- Apply for an electronic SIM card with your operator (if possible). After processing the application, you will receive a QR code.
- Open “Settings” – “Cellular” – “Add cellular tariff”.
- Scan the received QR code.
- Click Add Cellular Tariff.
If you are prompted for a confirmation code to activate your eSIM card, enter the number provided by your carrier.
After adding eSIM on iPhone you need to designate a new tariff. For example, one might be called “Working”, and second – “Private”… The default option is “Main” and “Additional”… These designations are used when you need to select a phone number for calls, sending SMS and data transmission.
If desired, you can restrict the access of one of the numbers to cellular data. For example, if you want to use the second number only for SMS or restrict Internet access for it. To do this, open “Settings” – “Cellular data” – “Cellular data” (yes, these items are named the same). Also, if you open one of the tariffs, you can completely turn it off, restrict access to LTE, activate data roaming and get access to other features, just like on a regular SIM card.
How to switch between regular SIM and eSIM on iPhone
You can switch phone numbers before making a call. To do this, click on the name of the current tariff (most often “Basic”) and select eSIM. The same works with iMessage.
By default, iPhone uses the number you called the contact from last time… If you want to configure calls for a specific subscriber from one number, select a contact and click “Preferred cellular tariff”. Then select the number you want to use to contact this contact.
How to remove eSIM from iPhone
If necessary remove eSIM, follow these steps.
- Go to the “Settings” menu.
- Choose “Cellular” or “Mobile Data”.
- Select the subscription plan you want to remove.
- Click Remove Cellular Tariff.
If you need to cancel your cellular data plan, contact your carrier. Removing the eSIM from iPhone does not terminate your cellular contract.
