speed up animation and add icon dividers

Ever since the 11-inch MacBook Air, I’ve gotten into the habit of hiding the Dock to maximize screen real estate. In this mode, the Dock appears on top of application windows, and only if you move the cursor to the bottom edge of the monitor.

Dock default spawn rate

The nuance is that the standard Dock appearance animation is too slow and annoying if you use the Dock to switch between applications. Now I will tell you how to reduce delays using a simple command in the Terminal. And as a bonus, I’ll teach you how to add visual dividers to the Dock for better navigation.

Speed up Dock animations

Dock animation speed is configurable through Terminal. You can find it in Applications → Utilities

Turn off animation completely:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}';killall Dock

Speed up animation by 7 times:

defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -float 0.15;killall Dock

Revert default settings:

defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier;killall Dock

The standard animation speed is 1 second. I prefer to set 0.15 seconds

Adding dividers to the Dock

Dividers can be used to visually split the Dock into zones by inserting white space between icons. I made four zones for myself: files, internet, work and the rest.

Separators help you group apps by topic

Zones help you navigate icons faster, even if the Dock is lengthened by new application icons. Such icons appear on the right, it is for them that I selected the “Rest” zone.

On the edges of each zone, it is convenient to put icons that you refer to most often. In the “Internet” zone, I have Safari and Telegram. And in the “work” area – Sketch and iA Writer.

To add a separator, enter in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}';killall Dock

An empty zone behaves like a regular icon. It can be moved anywhere and pulled out of the Dock to remove it.

The separator can be dragged anywhere
